About CBT

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a short term talking therapy that helps people identify the links between their cognitions (thoughts), emotions, bodily sensations and behaviours, as set out below.  Initial CBT sessions help you become aware of unhelpful patterns of reacting to triggering thoughts, sensations and emotions.

Interventions including psycho-education, cognitive restructuring, behavioural activation and experiments are used to enable the person to subsequently respond to these triggers in a more effective and helpful way.

CBT is a collaborative process where the therapist and the client work together to identify goals in a safe supportive environment. Clients are encouraged to take an active part in therapy and are ultimately enabled to develop skills so that they can become their own therapist.

“Homework” is used in-between sessions to enable clients to come to new understandings and practice the techniques that have been introduced in sessions thus enabling rapid skill integration into your everyday life.

Frequently asked questions

CBT is an active short-term, evidence based structured therapy that builds on a person’s existing strengths and skills and tailors additional skill development for everyday life.

Sessions typically last 50 minutes.

There are certain agreed occasions where sessions maybe up to 90 minutes.

Flexible daytime and evening appointments are available

Sessions can also be held over Skype or telephone if they are more convenient.

Ideally sessions are initially weekly or 2 weekly as evidence suggests this is optimal, although other arrangements can be discussed at the start of treatment.

The number of sessions you will need is linked to your specific difficulties and engagement in intervention plans. Typically this can vary from between 6 – 20 sessions as set out by National Institute for Clinical Excellence, who provide, evidence based guidance for treating certain presentations

Fees are payable by cheque, cash or by BACS
